A new chapter for philanthropy? | Culture | guardian.co.uk: "Today a new website, wedidthis.org.uk, opens for business. It's an intriguing idea: it hopes to support specific arts projects via donations, of any size, given online. If the project reaches its target funding, the donors will be given a small reward (in fact the bigger the donation, the heftier the reward – rising from acknowledgements on the website to, say, a champagne reception with cast and conductor). If the campaign doesn't reach its target, the donors will be refunded (but not receive the reward)."

Cathy Pharoah: Charitable tax reliefs would encourage major donors - Third Sector: "he wealthy need an incentive to donate and we should respond to their concerns, says our columnist

It seems that at long last the UK's major donors are finding their voice in the great philanthropy debate. So what are they are asking for? Are we fully prepared for this part of the big society?

Greater scope to influence how their donations are spent is one issue. At the recent launch of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's strategy for philanthropy, for example, Lord Sainsbury appealed for more acceptance of private donors as trustees of charities they donate to."

To do checklist pared down for smaller charities
By Judith Tan and Carolyn Quek
The 2007 Code of Governance of Charities and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) has been refined to provide greater flexibility to the different charities.

SMALLER charities whose annual receipts are less than $50,000 a year will have to fulfil fewer requirements in order to meet the recommended guidelines for charities in Singapore.

Such charities, which make up about 250 of the more than 2,000 charities and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs) here, need to comply with only a core set of principles when following the Charity Council's Code of Governance."

Colleges need university-style matched giving | Education | The Guardian

Colleges need university-style matched giving | Education | The Guardian: "I must admit to being in two minds about the green paper on 'giving', which Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude published between Christmas and New Year. It was very clear to me even under the last government that public funds would never be sufficient to do everything our college could and should do, and I am just as clear that colleges should be doing everything we can to fill the gap in other ways – including from philanthropic giving. It's just that I'm not entirely comfortable having the government on my side – because giving its support to philanthropy at a time of public sector cuts might accidentally damage the cause."

The Big Boom: Is Your Organization Making Good Use of Boomer Volunteers?

The Big Boom: Is Your Organization Making Good Use of Boomer Volunteers?: "Nancy Froklage represents a new breed of retiree. At the leading edge of the Baby Boom, Froklage is like many of her peers — well-educated, opinionated, passionate and nowhere near ready to put her feet up. Rather than seeing retirement as the end to professional life, Boomers perceive it as a change point, an opportunity to move into new challenges, and sometimes into what has been called an encore career.

While Froklage’s process of finding meaningful post-retirement work involved trial and error — she tells of traveling to Istanbul for an interview only to remember how much she loathes travel, and about exploring a dolphin rescue where the cost of volunteering was astronomical — the nonprofit sector is also beginning to adjust in order to prepare for this new breed of volunteers."

A very common reason that is cited for not giving is that people don’t know where to start. Here is a ready reckoner."
